School Safety SITE|SAFETYNET℠By Robert Jordan

Drones in Schools: A Game-Changer for Safety? As school safety remains a top priority, Highland Park ISD is exploring a bold new tool: drones to confront active shooters. I recently wrote about this for SITE|SAFETYNET℠, and I’m excited to share the highlights with you.

Austin-based Campus Guardian Angels has developed drones that can navigate school hallways, deploy pepper spray or flashbangs, and even neutralize threats in seconds—all controlled remotely. At a demo in HPISD, these drones showed they can respond in 15 seconds and provide critical situational awareness, giving law enforcement a head start.

Many schools struggle to comply with Texas’s House Bill 3, which mandates armed security but offers limited funding. These drones, priced at $15,000 for six plus $4/month per student, provide a cost-effective alternative, especially for districts stretched thin.

Tested in Florida and Boerne ISD, this tech could buy precious time in a crisis. It’s not a complete solution, but it’s a step toward innovation in safety. At SITE|SAFETYNET℠, we’re committed to tracking these advancements to keep our communities secure.
