A Morning of Tragedy: Mass Shooting at Annunciation Catholic School.

Today, a devastating act of violence shattered the peace of Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis. During a morning Mass, two young students—ages 8 and 10—were killed and seventeen others wounded; fourteen of the injured were children. The suspect, a man in his early 20s with no known criminal history, fired into the church through the windows using a rifle, shotgun, and pistol before taking his own life behind the building. Authorities quickly concluded there was no longer an active threat, but the horror remains.

Incident Overview

Why This Matters

This tragedy lays bare how even sacred school environments are vulnerable to orchestrated attacks. Morning Masses bring together the entire school body in exposed settings, often without strong perimeter defenses or protocols for chosen vulnerable spaces like sanctuaries.

Our Call to Action

As this initially settled batch of the school year begins, parents, educators, and safety professionals must reflect on this painful event and take steps to protect every child:

  1. Review Existing Safety Protocols
Especially in religious or gathering spaces where vulnerability is heightened.
  2. Coordinate with First Responders
Develop realistic, scenario-based drills—not just lockdowns, but responses to external threats.
  3. Invest in Trauma-Informed Support
Local counselors, mental health professionals, and hospitals (such as those in Minnesota) will be critical in the days and weeks ahead for this community.

This morning’s violence at Annunciation Catholic School is another heartbreaking reminder: schools must be sanctuaries in name—and in security.
