School Shootings in 2024: A Growing Concern and a Call for Action. The number of school shootings in 2024 that resulted in injuries or deaths has slightly outpaced last year’s tally, according to Education Week’s school shootings tracker. This year saw 39 school shootings that met the criteria for inclusion in Education Week’s tracker, making it the second-highest total since the publication began documenting these incidents in 2018. While the death toll decreased compared to prior years, the persistent frequency of these events underscores the ongoing need for proactive measures to address school safety.

Gun violence in and around schools profoundly impacts students, staff, families, and communities. These tragedies, whether widely reported or briefly mentioned, leave lasting scars. Each incident, whether it results in a single injury or a mass casualty event, serves as a somber reminder of the vulnerabilities present in our educational institutions. The ripple effects extend far beyond the immediate aftermath, creating emotional and psychological challenges for all those connected to the affected schools.

Since Education Week began tracking school shootings, 221 such incidents have been documented as of December 31, 2024. Their tracker defines a school shooting as an incident where at least one person other than the shooter is injured by gunfire on school property during school hours or school-sponsored events. This year, over two-thirds of the shootings occurred outdoors on school grounds, highlighting the challenges administrators and security personnel face in preventing violence in less controlled environments. Notably, at least one school shooting occurred every month in 2024.

Understanding the Trends

Mass school shootings—defined by the Gun Violence Archive as incidents where four or more individuals are injured or killed, excluding the shooter—increased compared to 2023. Four such shootings took place this year, including a tragic event at Apalachee High School in Georgia, where a 14-year-old student fatally shot two students and two teachers while injuring nine others. This incident was the most devastating in terms of casualties for the year.

Nationwide, 18 people lost their lives, and 59 others were injured due to gun violence in schools in 2024. While the death toll was lower than in the previous two years, the total number of casualties—combining injuries and deaths—remains alarmingly high. These statistics reflect not only the immediate consequences of gun violence but also the pressing need for effective preventative measures.

Ripple Effects and Persistent Challenges

Beyond the immediate tragedies, the impact of school shootings reverberates across the nation. For example, in the aftermath of the Apalachee High School shooting, schools nationwide reported an increase in violent threats. While many of these were ultimately deemed unfounded, the psychological toll on students, staff, and families was significant.

Years after incidents occur, unanswered questions and unresolved challenges persist. This year marked the 25th anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre, which set the stage for many of the safety protocols now in place. However, the continuing prevalence of school shootings demonstrates the need for innovative solutions and sustained commitment to school safety.
