Shooting at Evergreen High School in Colorado Leaves Three Students Critically Injured. On Wednesday afternoon, tragedy struck Evergreen High School in the Colorado foothills when a shooting left three students critically wounded. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the situation remains fluid, with uncertainty over how many shooters may have been involved.
The incident occurred just after noon at Evergreen High School, located 28 miles southwest of Denver. By 12:40 p.m., emergency communications confirmed reports of “an active assailant in the area.”
The Immediate Impact
St. Anthony’s Hospital in Lakewood, a Level 1 Trauma Center, confirmed that three minors from Evergreen High School were admitted with gunshot wounds. All three remain in critical condition and are undergoing emergency treatment.
Authorities urged parents not to rush directly to the school as the scene was still active. Nearby Wilmot Elementary was placed on lockdown as a precaution.
Jacki Kelley, spokesperson for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, shared that multiple law enforcement agencies from across the Denver metro area responded quickly, deploying teams to clear the school room by room. She confirmed that the shooting occurred on school grounds and likely inside the school building.
Community Response
The district established a reunification center at Bergen Meadow Elementary School to reconnect students with their families safely. Outside, families gathered anxiously as students were escorted out of the school in single file.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis issued a statement, saying:
“Students should be able to attend school safely and without fear across our state and nation. We are all praying for the victims and the entire community.”
