SEATTLE, Wash. – In a tragic incident that underscores the urgent need for enhanced school safety measures, a 17-year-old student and football team member was shot and killed in the parking lot of Garfield High School on Thursday. The incident occurred during lunchtime as the student, Amarr Murphy-Paine, heroically attempted to break up a fight.
The altercation occurred just outside the school at the Garfield Teen Life Center. As Murphy-Paine intervened to stop the fight, he was shot, reports the Seattle Times. Despite the immediate administration of CPR by an adult witness and later by local first responders, Murphy-Paine succumbed to his injuries at Harborview Medical Center.
The shooter, described as a high-school-aged male wearing a red hoodie, light-colored pants, and light shoes, remains at large, according to KOMO. In the wake of the shooting, Garfield High School was placed on lockdown, and classes were canceled on Friday and Monday.
This tragic event highlights the persistent safety challenges faced by schools nationwide. The area around Garfield High School has experienced multiple shootings this past year, prompting Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell to announce an increased police presence at the school.
